Do Dive Tables Still Matter in the Dive-Computer Era?
The short answer
Yes — not because you'll navigate every dive from a laminated card, but because tables are the only way to genuinely understand what your dive computer is doing. A diver who has never planned a dive on tables tends to treat the computer as an oracle; a diver who has treats it as a calculator. The difference shows up exactly when it matters: when the computer floods, locks out, or gives a number that doesn't smell right.

How no-decompression tables work
All no-deco tables encode the same underlying idea: the deeper you go, the faster your tissues absorb nitrogen, and the less time you can stay before a direct ascent to the surface stops being acceptable.
- Depth and time in, limit out. For a planned maximum depth, the table gives a maximum bottom time — the no-decompression limit (NDL).
- Letter groups carry nitrogen forward. Surfacing doesn't reset you. The table assigns a letter group representing residual nitrogen, which decays over your surface interval.
- Repetitive dives get shorter limits. Your post-interval group converts into residual nitrogen time that subtracts from the next dive's allowance.
Working through that sequence by hand a few times teaches you, viscerally, why a second dive to the same depth has a shorter limit, why longer surface intervals buy back bottom time, and why depth is so much more expensive than time.
What tables teach that computers hide
A computer tracks your actual multilevel profile and typically grants more bottom time than a square-profile table would. That's a real benefit — and a subtle trap. Because the computer handles the arithmetic invisibly, it's easy to stop planning dives and start merely doing them: descend, watch the NDL tick down, ascend when it gets small. Table-trained divers tend to keep the older habit of deciding depth, time, and reserve on the surface and treating the computer as verification. A sensible practice routine
- Plan tomorrow's dive on the NOAA tables tonight, then compare against what your computer permits. The gap between the two is a measure of how much multilevel credit you're relying on.
- Run a two-dive day on paper: first dive, surface interval, letter group, adjusted second-dive limit. Twenty minutes, once a season, keeps the skill alive.
- Carry the table as a backup. If your computer dies on day three of a dive trip, a table plus a depth gauge and timer can keep you diving conservatively instead of sitting out.
Tables and computers aren't rivals. The table is the theory; the computer is the automation.
