Bar vs PSI on scuba tanks: reading gauges anywhere

Two units, one tank

Recreational diving inherited two pressure systems. Most of the world stamps cylinders and marks gauges in bar, a metric unit close to one atmosphere of pressure. The United States uses psi — pounds per square inch. Neither is better; they simply grew out of different engineering traditions, and both appear constantly if you dive in more than one country.

The conversion is simple to hold in your head as a rule of thumb: one bar is roughly 14.5 psi. That means the common European working pressures translate like this:

  • 200 bar is roughly 2,900 psi
  • 232 bar is roughly 3,365 psi
  • 300 bar is roughly 4,350 psi

Going the other way, a typical American aluminum cylinder filled to 3,000 psi is sitting at about 207 bar.

Reading an unfamiliar rental gauge

The practical moment this matters is the rental counter. You pick up a rig abroad, glance at the submersible pressure gauge, and the needle is pointing at a number that means nothing in the units you trained with.

Three habits make this a non-issue:

  • Find the scale first. Most gauges print the unit near the dial center or along the arc. Many modern gauges carry both scales, bar on one ring and psi on the other.
  • Anchor on the full mark. Ask the shop what a full fill reads on their cylinders. Whatever the unit, that number is your reference for the whole dive day.
  • Translate your personal turn-around number once, on the boat, not underwater. If you are used to thinking in psi, work out what your usual reserve looks like in bar before you splash, and remember one number rather than converting on the fly.

Why the stamped numbers on the cylinder matter

Every cylinder carries stamped markings that include its working pressure — the pressure it is designed to be filled to. Fill operators go by these markings, and gauges only make sense against them. A 232 bar stamp and a 3000 psi stamp describe cylinders with similar but not identical capacities, which is one reason the same nominal size of tank can feel different between regions.

If you only remember one thing from this page, make it this: the unit is part of the number. A gauge reading of 100 means very different things in bar and in psi — one is a comfortable mid-dive reading, the other is nearly empty. Knowing which one you are looking at is a thirty-second check that removes a whole category of confusion.
